As a member of The Arts Society, you have the opportunity to get involved in volunteering.  You must be a member to do so due to our insurance requirements.

The Arts Society provides young people (aged 8-18) and communities with exciting opportunities to get involved in creative arts activities. Our work with young people and communities helps to build a lasting enthusiasm for the arts and an awareness of arts heritage and its conservation.  It also contributes to well-being and self-fulfilment.

Opportunities to get involved in arts activities are organised locally by individual Societies to reflect the needs of different communities and groups.

The Arts Society supports a wide range of arts projects ranging from running arts awards to funding artists in residence in schools and in community hubs.

Over the years our Society has developed productive partnerships with the local education authorities, secondary schools, Forth Valley College, the Art Collection at Stirling University and local organisations who work with young people and community groups. Most recently this has included Creative Stirling and Start-Up Stirling.

 

Current projects include providing sponsorship for:

  • We have implemented “The Arts in the Community Rural Outreach Project”              We have continued our collaboration with Start-Up Stirling, having successfully applied and been awarded £1500 for the “Arts for All Rural Arts Project” from The Arts Society Patricia Fay Charity Grant, - the maximum award possible. We used this to run 5 specialist art workshops at the Callander Community Hub in July and August 2025. These were led by local artist Lesley Anne Derks and attended by a wide age range, from 2-90 years old. The grant was also used to buy art materials for other community hubs and to source 65 age specific art activity bags for young people across Stirlingshire which were delivered via the Food Bank Network (costing £12-£15 each).

  • “An Introduction to Set Design and Construction” workshops on 14th and 15th June 2025.  These workshops are being organised by Creative Stirling and are a dynamic and interactive project designed to inspire and empower young people experiencing disadvantage, including those disengaged from formal education. Participants will gain hands-on experience in set and prop design while building practical skills, confidence, and professional connections. The project will culminate in the display of their work at the Creative Stirling Venue. By fostering creativity, skill development, and personal growth, this initiative will provide participants with a pathway to further opportunities in education and the creative industries.

 

Past projects sponsored by The Arts Society Stirling and Forth Valley have included:

  • In 2023/2024 sponsoring Start-Up Stirling to provide art materials enabling young people to get involved in creative activities during the summer and winter holidays.  The activities took place at 9 community hubs across Stirlingshire.
  •  In 2023/2024 sponsoring Creative Stirling to run appropriation workshops. Creative Stirling welcomed families and young people from their EDI priority groups to attend Appropriate workshop. Participants were reached via Creative Stirling current contacts, or through various community and third sector networks throughout Stirlingshire, including families living in multiple deprivation, New Scot/Refugee families, young people, LGBTQIA+Ethnic Minority families.  Two sessions were delivered, firstly with children aged, between 5 and 11, and the second for young people aged 12+. The sessions provided a platform for children and young people facing adversity to broaden their creative horizons and social networks. The workshop successfully united participants, fostering friendships, enjoyment, and an informal learning experience about art.
  • In 2022/2023 sponsoring Creative Stirling to hold “The World Made Me Dotty” workshops for young people (8-18) inspired the work of Japanese artist, Yayoi Kusama.  The outcome of this project was colourful and creative, showcased the incredible things that can happen when communities come together to design and create beautiful artworks. In total, 45 people attended the creative workshop and Creative Stirling welcomed a daily average of 100 people to the exhibition, which lasted a total of 8 weeks.
  • Weekend Portfolio Development workshops targeting senior school pupils held at Stirling University and led by a tutor from Forth Valley College. Competition is fierce to gain a place at art school and these weekend workshops were aimed at improving access to further and higher education. The sessions were an opportunity for talented senior pupils to engage in drawing activities that gave them freedom to express themselves, enhance their artistic vocabulary and develop their confidence for interview and arrival at college.
  • This initiative culminated in selected work being showcased in an exhibition hosted by Stirling University Art Collection. Once again pupils and teachers evaluated the experience very positively and it is hoped that this will be an annual event in the local education calendar.
  • In 2017-8 the Society organised a poster competition in local primary schools. The Society commissioned a working artist, Laura Newbury, to work with P7 pupils to design posters to promote our lectures, using the work of Paul Gauguin as inspiration. An exhibition was held to display the pupils' work and certificates awarded.   These art works are currently being used on marketing materials.
  • The Arts Society was invited to attend the annual ARTiculation competition funded by The Roche Court Educational Trust in The University of Stirling. Senior pupils from all over Scotland compete by giving a ten-minute talk on a piece of art/sculpture which has inspired or influenced them. An adjudicator then judges the talks and a winner is announced.
